Slips, Trips, and Falls are some of the most common workplace injuries, especially in a bustling environment like ours where liquids and equipment are part of our daily operations.
The below information will help you stay safe as you move about the restaurant!
Slips, trips, and falls can lead to serious injuries such as fractures, lacerations, or even more severe long-term conditions. They can occur due to:
Wet or oily surfaces
Spills that aren't promptly cleaned up
Uneven floor surfaces
Loose or unanchored mats and rugs
Obstructed views
Poor lighting
Clutter and debris in walkways
Immediate Action on Spills: Clean up or report spills as soon as they occur.
Regular Cleaning Schedules: Keep floors free of debris, and ensure regular maintenance.
Anti-Slip Flooring: Utilize mats in areas that tend to get wet or slippery.
Adequate Lighting: Ensure that all areas are well-lit, and replace burned-out bulbs promptly.
Wear Proper Footwear: Always wear appropriate non-slip shoes while working.
Use Signage: Wet floor signs should be used liberally and removed only when the hazard no longer exists.
Highlight Changes in Elevation: Ensure steps or changes in floor level are clearly marked.
Navigating stairs requires extra attention, particularly in a fast-paced restaurant and brewery environment. Improper use of stairs can result in falls that carry a higher risk for injury.
Use Handrails: Always keep one hand on the handrail, especially when carrying items. Handrails are a first line of defense against falls.
Step Mindfully: Place your entire foot on the step rather than just the toes or heels. This ensures better balance and stability.
Proper Lighting: Stairwells should be well-lit at all times. Report any lighting issues immediately to prevent visibility-related accidents.
Maintain an Unobstructed View: If carrying a load, make sure it does not obstruct your view of the steps. Use elevators or ask for assistance if the load is too large.
Keep Stairs Clear: Ensure stairs are free of any objects, debris, or spills. Even small objects can be a tripping hazard on stairs.
Signage for Stair Hazards: Clearly mark any steps that are uneven or in disrepair and report them for maintenance.
Wear Appropriate Footwear: Shoes should provide good grip and support. Avoid footwear with high heels or smooth soles on stairs.
One Step at a Time: Avoid skipping steps or rushing up and down stairs.
Attempt to sit down to reduce the distance of a fall.
Hold on to the handrail to help regain balance or to stop the fall.
Protect your head by tucking it forward if you fall backward.
Be Aware of Surroundings: Pay attention to where you walk and any potential hazards.
Don’t Rush: Moving too quickly can increase the risk of an accident.
